This spectacular garden plant needs plenty of room. It grows the largest leaves of any plant grown in the open. The giant leaves can grow to 3 metres across and are big enough to shelter a man from the rain. Plant in a damp situation - Gunnera must always have plenty of moisture available. In spring the great brown cone shaped flower heads are first to appear, followed by the new leaves which have a spectacular growth rate. When the leaves die back in autumn, be sure to cut them off and use them to cover the crown as it must be protected from frost.
