Rheum Palmatum

  • Rheum Palmatum
Latin Name: Chinese Rhubarb

A spectacular architectural plant, the Giant Rhubarb grows to over 3 metres in height. Needs plenty of room but makes a great feature plant. It needs deep, rich well drained soil and will grow into a large clump. In spring the red or cream buds appear from the dormant crowns, developing so quickly that they can almost be seen growing! The lobed leaves are large and attractively, deeply cut. Flower spikes are red or cream, growing above the leaves. Trim back old flower stalks and remove decaying leaves to maintain an attractive plant. Can be propagated by division in early spring. An excellent pondside plant, or for any moist situation in the garden. Needs plenty of room.
